CLASS DESCRIPTION
I was fortunate to take many, workshops with Everett Raymond Kinstler over two decades. I participated in two fourteen day workshops with him at the Santa Fe Institute of Art. His instruction changed me as a painter and a teacher. I am honored to share some of his wisdom in his home studio . There are certain principles that apply to a painting no matter the subject matter. Kinstler was always teaching principles over technique. Most workshops are subject matter based, which is a good thing, but the emphasis of this class is different. My workshop deals with the underlying truth of making a strong painting. I first came to his workshops expecting to learn about painting a portrait. I was surprised that we painted everything, people, places and things, all with the same approach. Our goal is not just to report what the subject looks like, but to find the character, the poetry of each subject while preserving each artists’ particular point of view. This directive was at the heart of his teaching and has become central to my teaching as well. Each student will bring their choice of reference and their particular viewpoint as an artist. A four day class is rare for me and I am excited about what can be accomplished with the extra time. The beautiful hillside setting and glorious natural lighting in the studio only adds to the experience. Instruction will be demonstration and powerpoint lecture. The small size class will ensure tons of easel side help.

DEVELOPING YOUR CREATIVE VOICE
MAY 1-3, 2024, BOOTH MUSEUM, CARTERSVILLE, GA
Push the boundaries of working from reference to help discover your personal point of view and help you to create more painterly paintings. There will be a heavy emphasis on specific skills to help you create a good foundation for your painting. Students will chose their own subject. STUDIO PAINTING:BEYOND THE BASICS

The Beyond the Basics series is designed to explore, more in depth, some specific aspects of painting...aspects that are beyond a painter's general knowledge. In this class we will focus on "Selection"...what to paint, how to organize your subject matter on the canvas, and how to select a color scheme. A full color book of notes and four weeks online guidance are provided as a follow up to class.
DRAWING AS FOUNDATION FOR PAINTING
JULY 10 - 12, 2024 / $500 / ON TRACK STUDIOS/ FRANKLIN, TN
Don’t let your struggles with your drawing skills hold you back from successful paintings. Face your fears head on and come prepared to learn practical approaches for drawing any subject matter. You will not be creating drawings as a finished product, but learning skills through exercises and quick studies. Everyone learns differently, so this topic will be approached from many angles. Drawing is a most important skill for any artist.

LEARNING TO PAINT THE HEAD
OCT 9-11, 2024 / $590 / ON TRACK STUDIOS/ FRANKLIN, TN
The class is designed as a skills building workshop. We will take a deep dive into drawing, proportions, value, edges, and likeness. Class exercises, will train you for painting better portraits. 4 weeks of online help, following the class, will walk you through that portrait project that you have been wanting to do. Students will receive a full color booklet of notes.
ONLINE MENTORING PROGRAM

THE FOCUS WILL BE ON YOU / $850 / SIX WEEKS INSTRUCTION
Focused learning is the goal of this online mentoring program. The curriculum will be tailored to YOUR specific needs. This intense period of one on one instruction is certain to take your work to a different level. Only four students will be allowed into the program for each six weeks period to insure maximum personal attention.
The intensive instruction includes:
• Unlimited access by email to touch base for quick answers to a question or get a critique. Working through email will give you a written transcript of your exchanges with Dawn, allowing you to revisit her advice anytime you wish.
•Regular assignments and exercises that will move your progress along toward your goal.
• A lot of personal attention.
